Fertility Scan
No fasting is required. Please attend with a comfortably full bladder by drinking around 1 litre of water 1 hour before your appointment. Please provide the first day of your last menstrual period and your usual cycle length. Baseline fertility or antral follicle scans are usually performed around days 2–5 of the menstrual cycle, while follicle tracking is timed according to your cycle or fertility treatment plan. If a transvaginal scan is required, you will be asked to empty your bladder beforehand. This will only be performed with your consent.

This scan can assess the health of the uterus and ovaries before conception, estimate the likely ovulation window, and measure the thickness of the endometrium for assisted conception. It can also monitor follicle development and endometrial thickness before private IVF treatment in the UK or overseas, as well as confirm the presence and position of an intrauterine contraceptive device, such as an IUCD or coil.
A transvaginal ultrasound is required with consent for this fertility scan to provide a detailed assessment of the uterus, ovaries, follicles and endometrial lining. You may be asked to attend with a full bladder for an initial abdominal scan and then empty it before the transvaginal scan.
