The CA-125 test measures the level of Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125), a protein found in the blood that can be elevated in certain conditions, particularly ovarian cancer. It is primarily used to monitor or detect ovarian cancer but can also be useful in assessing other health conditions.

Why It’s Important:

  • Monitor Ovarian Cancer: The CA-125 test is often used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for ovarian cancer or to check for recurrence after treatment.
  • Diagnose Ovarian Cancer: While not a definitive diagnostic tool, elevated CA-125 levels can signal the presence of ovarian cancer or other conditions.
  • Evaluate Symptoms: The test may be used if a person is experiencing symptoms like pelvic pain, bloating, or abnormal menstrual bleeding, though CA-125 levels can also be elevated due to benign conditions.

Conditions that Can Increase CA-125:

  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • Fibroids
  • Pregnancy (especially in the first trimester)
  • Liver disease (such as cirrhosis)
